Get closer to the restoration

Gwrych Castle is undergoing one of the most exciting periods of restoration in its recent history.

As an Annual Pass holder, you’ll have opportunities to follow that work more closely through exclusive restoration updates and occasional behind-the-scenes tours.

Discover how historic parts of the castle are being conserved and rebuilt, hear about the challenges involved in bringing a Grade I listed ruin back to life, and see progress as different phases of the project unfold.

Where circumstances allow, special Annual Pass holder tours may provide access to areas or viewpoints not normally included within the standard visitor route.

As Gwrych remains an active conservation and construction site, the availability and content of restoration tours will vary throughout the year.

Turn a day at Gwrych into an overnight escape with a stay at Tan-yr-Ogo Lodge, our historic lodge within the Gwrych Castle estate.

Gwrych Castle is cared for by the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust.

Income from visitors plays an important part in caring for the estate and supporting the long-term conservation and restoration of this nationally important Grade I listed castle.

Every Annual Pass helps us continue that work.

Important information

Annual Passes are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase and include General Admission during advertised normal opening days and hours.

Seasonal events, evening events, special experiences and separately ticketed activities are not included unless specifically stated. Annual Pass holder discounts will apply to selected events and experiences.

Accommodation, wellbeing treatments, special tours and other Annual Pass benefits are subject to availability and individual offer terms.

Restoration and behind-the-scenes tours will take place on selected dates and may change or be cancelled where conservation work, construction activity or site safety requires.

Pre-booking may be required for Annual Pass holder events, tours and particularly busy dates.

Become part of the Gwrych team

Volunteers have played an extraordinary part in the rescue of Gwrych Castle and continue to be at the heart of its future.

From welcoming visitors and helping with events to caring for the gardens, supporting conservation projects and assisting behind the scenes, there are many ways to get involved.

Whether you can give us a few hours occasionally or would like to volunteer regularly, we’d love to hear from you.

Why volunteer at Gwrych Castle?

Volunteering is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and make a real contribution to the future of one of Wales’ most remarkable historic sites.

By joining our volunteer team, you can:

Most importantly, you’ll be contributing directly to the continuing rescue and revival of Gwrych Castle.

What sort of volunteering can I do?

Opportunities vary throughout the year and according to the needs of the castle, but volunteer roles can include:

  • Visitor welcome and engagement

  • Castle and garden stewards

  • Gardening and estate work

  • Events and activities

  • Historical research and archives

  • Collections and interpretation

  • Practical conservation and maintenance support

  • Administration and behind-the-scenes support

  • Photography, media and promotion

  • Supporting tours and special visitor experiences

You don’t need to be an expert. Enthusiasm, reliability and an interest in Gwrych are often the most important things you can bring.

Role-specific guidance and training will be provided where required.

Do I need previous experience?

No. Many of our volunteer opportunities don’t require previous experience.

We welcome people with a wide range of backgrounds, interests and experience. If you already have professional, practical or specialist skills that you would like to contribute, we’d also be very interested to hear from you.

Wherever possible, we’ll try to match your interests, skills and availability with a suitable role.

How much time do I need to give?

There isn’t a single minimum commitment for every volunteer.

Some people volunteer regularly each week, while others help fortnightly, monthly, at particular events or when specific projects require additional support.

We understand that people have work, family and other commitments, so we’ll discuss what is realistic for both you and the castle.

What training will I receive?

All new volunteers receive an introduction to Gwrych Castle and the information needed to carry out their role safely and confidently.

Depending on your role, this may include:

  • Site induction

  • Health and safety

  • Role-specific training

  • Visitor engagement

  • Safeguarding

  • Emergency procedures

  • Equipment or practical task training

Where appropriate, new volunteers may work alongside experienced members of the team while they become familiar with their role.

You will not be expected to undertake a task without the appropriate information, instruction or training.

Are there any checks before I can volunteer?

We take the recruitment and welfare of our volunteers seriously.

Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a short application process and provide references. Certain roles may also require an appropriate Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, particularly where safeguarding responsibilities are involved.

If a DBS check is required for your role, we’ll explain the process and arrange this with you.

Can couples, friends or groups volunteer together?

Yes. Couples and friends are very welcome to apply, although available roles and rotas will determine whether you can always volunteer together.

We may also have opportunities for community, educational and corporate groups wishing to support particular projects or volunteer days.

Will volunteering cost me anything?

We aim to provide the tools, equipment and training required for your volunteer role.

If you have particular circumstances or concerns about costs associated with volunteering, including travel, please discuss these with us when you apply.

Do volunteers replace paid members of staff?

No. Volunteers make an important additional contribution to Gwrych Castle and complement the work undertaken by our staff and contractors.

Volunteering enables people to contribute their time, enthusiasm and skills to the charitable work of the castle and helps us provide a richer experience for our visitors.

Is volunteering the same as work experience?

No. Volunteering and formal work experience are different.

However, volunteering can provide valuable experience, help you develop new skills and strengthen your CV. Where appropriate, volunteers who have worked with us for a suitable period may also be able to request a reference based on their volunteering.

Who can volunteer?

We want volunteering at Gwrych Castle to be welcoming and accessible to as many people as possible.

Opportunities are available for people from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels. Some roles may have particular age, physical, safeguarding or practical requirements because of the nature of the activity or the historic site.
