Access at Gwrych Castle

Several interior areas are open to visitors, although access to the main house is limited while restoration work takes place. The Entrance Hall is open as a viewing area for the building works on days when construction is not taking place. Guided hard-hat tours are also available, offering the opportunity to explore parts of the main house and learn about its restoration.

Gwrych Castle was built into a hillside, so the estate has uneven ground, steps, slopes and steep footpaths. We recommend sturdy, comfortable footwear. Many footpaths along our standard visitor route are unsuitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and three-wheeled mobility scooters.

An alternative visitor route avoids steps but includes a slope leading to the Coach House Courtyard, which may be demanding for wheelchair users and anyone assisting them. Please speak to our team at the Visitor Centre if you require disabled parking or advice about this route.

The gardens and Chapel are currently reached by steps and do not have wheelchair access. Our team can advise on access to individual areas and guided tours to help you plan your visit.

Gwrych Castle is over 200 years old, Grade I listed and undergoing extensive restoration. Its historic layout, condition and hillside setting present challenges for accessibility. Any physical improvements to access need careful planning to protect the castle’s historic fabric and obtain any necessary permissions.
